Maduro proposes a date for parliamentary elections

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday proposed the date of parliamentary elections this year as part of his bid to counter the threat posed by National Assembly Speaker Juan Guido, who has declared himself the country’s legitimate president.

In a speech to his supporters, Maduro said the Constituent Assembly, which is controlled by the government, will consider calling for early elections to the National Assembly. Maduro denounced the National Assembly as a representative of capitalism.

The elections were originally scheduled for 2020.
